How Not to Be Wrong: The Power of Mathematical Thinking by Jordan Ellenberg
4.0
I went into this book very much hoping it would be the clear, cogent explanation of why math is essential in life and how an understanding of it is an important and worthwhile addition even to the life of those not mathematically inclined. And it began as that quite well.
It then became a much more technical book than expected though. While it did an excellent job of delving into fairly technical topics while speaking more in terms of the theory sans formulas, it did seem to me to get more technical than most readers would want. The end result was better for me as a former math major than it would be for most people I think.
If this is something you're interested in at all I'd definitely recommend it, but I'd suggest expecting that the later parts might be more than you're looking for unless you're actually interested in math. It was not as much for the casual reader as marketed. An excellent book nonetheless as long as you expect that.
