I don’t know how a book with this premise could possibly be boring but… here we are.

I understand that horror books normally run pretty short but there was so little character work here that I found it genuinely hard to feel anything for the characters (narrator included) outside of annoyance. It’s hard to feel tense and worried for the livelihood of people you simply don’t care about.

At first I was like “wow, this book is written so beautifully,” but that impression changed pretty quickly. The prose is packed full of flowery, lyrical language that teeters between being poetic and just downright convoluted. I’m of the impression that you can write however you want, as long as it doesn’t get in the way of the clarity of the novel. Unfortunately, some situations were so drenched in simile and metaphor that they became confusing and that messed with my ability to understand what was going on, let alone be scared about it.
