Incredibly cinematic in its pacing and imagery and less polyphonic than James' later work
An interesting book to read alongside Mumbo Jumbo, thinking about the struggles between "Western" religious traditions and more syncretic and local traditions. I'm also fascinated by the ways in which James has evolved in his depictions of queerness throughout his body of work.
