The Sandman: Overture: The Deluxe Edition by Neil Gaiman

5.0

I'm not sure how much I got out of the story of this volume as it just kind of washed over me without making an impact. What did make an impact, however, was J H Williams III's utterly astounding artwork. I don't think I've seen anything in comics like this before and you could get lost in each page for hours. It perfectly matches the dreamlike nature of the themes and characters and has some of the most inventive and impressive layouts and panelling I have seen in anything. Combined with Dave Stewart's colours it is frequently jaw dropping and worth your time alone. Throw in a big chunk of interesting behind the scenes extras at the back from everyone involved and you can't really go wrong.
