Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer

ok so I acknowledge that I am possibly being a bit unfair in my approach to this book as the film adaptation is one of my recent favorite movies, and honestly is becoming an all-timer for me, so I approached this with that in mind and I have to say I think prefer the movie's approach to this story so far?? which again, I feel bad about, as if I read this with no preconceived ideas in my mind I think I would have had a much higher sense of enjoyment, but nevertheless.

this is an instance where I am in awe of the power of adaptation and its transformational qualities (which I suppose is a bit on the nose considering the subject matter of this lol) because the movie took the bare bones of this story and wove something keeping the same concept and vibe but making something entirely different and beautiful. and the book has its own beauty that I do appreciate! still such a wonderfully creepy concept, and I love that we don't have all the answers because the protagonist doesn't because she's recording the events as they happened to her. the scene with the crawler is a thing of beauty, and although it was entirely different in some respects I do see how it inspired the beautifully creepy climax of the film adaptation (iykyk)

but i am excited to continue the series! the film is of course standalone and this world still has much story left to tell so I am looking forward to the other books, perhaps my opinions will be lifted

uhh smth smth consolidation of authority
