The Pianist: The Extraordinary Story of One Man's Survival in Warsaw, 1939–45 by Władysław Szpilman

dark emotional tense medium-paced

4.5

An incredible account of one Jewish Polish man's journey as he narrowly escapes death so many times, I lost count. Szpliman writes well enough for readers to forget he's not actually a writer at all.
I don't think there is ever a real happily ever after for Holocaust survivors - he loses everyone he ever cared about, including the only Nazi with morality (I really appreciated the closure on this),
but I'm grateful to him for sharing his story
