Okay, after this reread, I DID realize this book wasn't all that I cracked it up to be from my first time reading this series.

For starters, the most ANNOYING of all tropes is used. The "I'm-not-like-other-girls" trope. I HATE this trope and I greatly disliked it in this story.

Secondly, I did see some problems. For example, considering this book is in first person POV, America gave us more stuff about what was going on like a third POV narrator versus what SHE FELT about what was going on. In addition to this, America was stuck-up at times. On the other side of that, Maxon was a pretty boring character. We see him, but we don't see-see him, you know? Like he's there, but I want to get more of his emotions, more character from him.

Thirdly, the worldbuilding isn't terrible, but it's not top-notch either. There are rules, normalcies, history, and regions, but I think I would've connected better with the story if we had a map of Illea.

Although, I do want to give this book 4 stars still because it IS a lighthearted read. I laughed out loud several times, I still fangirl over Maxon, and I seek out the similarities between it and the Hunger Games since that it is what it is pitched as. It was such an enjoyable reread, I think I'm going to immediately dive into [b:The Elite|16248068|The Elite (The Selection, #2)|Kiera Cass|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1391454595l/16248068._SY75_.jpg|20397129].
