Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass

challenging emotional informative inspiring reflective sad slow-paced

4.5

Re-reading this book as an adult helped me understand that slavery is a subject that takes a long time to process. And as someone with no history of racial injustice or oppression put upon me, I cannot say that I will ever truly be able to fully understand slavery or the devastating effects it's left in its wake no matter how hard I try. However, I do believe that I should learn what I can about it. Reading these passages is at times equal parts sickening and heartbreaking. It is also deeply important. This is likely a book that I will return to over the years.
