I’ll preface this by saying by the end I quite enjoyed the book. However, I will say reading this as an American in 2024 I was horrified by the various things Solitaire does, and struggled to see any of it as a harmless. I spent most of my time trying to remind myself that this is just a YA novel and wasn’t going to turn into some horror story of school violence. I also didn’t really vibe with how everything was handled. I know it is influenced by Tori’s POV but I was very conflicted by how little people seemed to care about things, and how oblivious the adults seemed. Overall though, I think it’s a good book, and I appreciate the story that was told. I think it will be a book I think about and appreciate, but not one I would reread.
