Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

5.0

This is a love story with a difference - two widowers, who have been neighbours for years, are both dealing with loneliness in their own ways until one night Addie visits Louis with an idea…
Such a simple, beautiful read - I just adored it! At only 179 pages, I laughed and cried my way through this book in one sitting and didn’t want it to end.
Our Souls at Night was published posthumously as the award-winning author passed away in 2014 and to me it feels fitting this was his last novel. As the Washington Post noted “…such a tender, carefully polished work that it seems like a blessing we had no right to expect.”
In 2017, Netflix adapted this beautifully to film which starred Jane Fonda and Robert Redford (perfect casting in my opinion!). I would still highly recommend reading the book before watching the movie as the quality of writing is just a pleasure!
