Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach

4.0

I'm a long-time fan of Mary Roach's books, which impart delightful and fascinating trivia, are full of dorky humour, and use human (and in this case animal) stories to make scientific inquiries and debates relatable and meaningful. But Fuzz is anything but fluffy. Most of the book looks at animal control strategies around the world, which are seldom super pleasant for the animals, but Roach approaches it with an open mind, recognizing competing perspectives and different ecological and cultural influences behind different approaches. There are also a couple of chapters on the management of dangerous plants. Definitely a book that left me with a ton of fascinating facts and new appreciation for the challenges of trying to mediate and mitigate animal/human tensions.
