Holes by Louis Sachar

The story of several generations is well-woven for a satisfying conclusion. Sparse action played out on a stark landscape with vivid, though shallow characters. The cartoonish treatment fits with the brush of magic and myth that doesn’t need a strong foothold in reality. The ending was a bit too neat and tidy, but it’s appropriate for its target audience.
