Drager & Morgan: A Disappointment
This is a really painful review to write. I was so hyped when I saw this book being marketed on IG and the teasers were too much for me to resist. This is why I wasted no time in preordering GILDED WINGS. I couldn't wait to read it! Unfortunately, after reading it I was left very disappointed.
GILDED WINGS is the first of a duet from Jaymin Eve's "Fallen Fae Gods". Morgan Starrer is a librarian, charged with keeping up with the records of Fae books checked in and out of a library. She soon finds herself in the middle of an investigation into a missing book. Its then that she meets the owner of the library, Drager, a powerful sun god and dragon ruler of an entire territory in the Fae realm. There was an instant attraction resulting in fireworks between them. Morgan ends up entering the Fae realm to help solve the mystery of the missing book and reveal a traitor.
This book started out really good. It was funny, sexy and had all the potential for a very interesting story. I thought it possessed that "Shadow Beast Shifters" energy that I loved and I laughed out loud at certain parts of the book. By the time I reached the middle of the book, I felt as if I was knocked upside the head when the story took a very unexpected turn; the introduction of another possible love interest for Morgan... his dragon twin brother, Zahrek.
Personally, I prefer not to read books with love triangles and feel as if I was misled by the blurb and hyped advertisements promoting this book. There was NOTHING to indicate that there was going to be a triangle. Had I known this, I would have opted not to engage in this story.
While I don't believe that an author has to hold a reader's hand by posting every single trigger warning in the book, I do expect an author to reveal the basic notion that the heroine may have multiple love interests. I don't consider multiple love interests to be a trigger per se. But I do think that info is vital to decide whether or not I want to read a book where there is a competition for the heroine's affection. I felt as if I was blindsided. The other potential love interest showed up smack dab in the middle of the book. Out of nowhere, which ruined any type of build-up or admiration and cheering I'd done for Drager and Morgan. This development was a huge let down and I immediately lost interest in the story. I stopped and started this story a few times I was so annoyed and had to force myself to finish it.
Further, I disliked the fact that Drager and Morgan spent very little time together on page. It began to feel more like "The Adventures of Morgan & Lexi" as she seemed to spend more time on page with her best friend. To give Morgan and Drager less time together on page and then throw in a third MC who she is all of the sudden attracted to in the last few pages was in my eyes, rather ridiculous. At this point, as if it were even more impossible, I became even more annoyed by the cliffhanger at the end. I simply did not enjoy this story and have no desire to proceed to the second half of this series.
I am a huge Jaymin Eve fan and will continue to buy her books. I'm sorry... this storyline was already thin considering Morgan's main purpose for entering the Fae realm in the first place. But, the secret reveal of a love triangle basically destroyed any admiration I could have had for this book. and the characters just didn't work for me.
Happy reading!
