The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty
3.0
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
TW: violence toward animals; adult/minor relationship.
I enjoyed this book, but my expectations were too high going into it. I’m not even 100% sure what it is that didn’t quite work for me, but something was off for me. There are characters that feel like filler. They take up space, but don’t seem integral to the story. When the book opens you get a glimpse into a few of the people living in the Rabbit Hutch, but you don’t see most of them again until almost the end.
The story with Moses Robert doesn’t seem to go anywhere. There’s no conclusion to his story, but he does something redemptive in the end.
Blandine’s story doesn’t have any sort of conclusion. Hers is a story of someone who goes through too many traumatic events. She’s described as being very beautiful. Men seem drawn to her. It pushes her three male roommates to do despicable things in an attempt to win her affection.
I didn’t enjoy the violence against animals, especially toward the end of the book.
There is a lot that I enjoy. I appreciate the writing style. I enjoy the depiction of a town that’s been abandoned by one industrial complex, only to have modern industry moving in. That’s relatable for a lot of places.
