What an intriguing story! We have third-person POV from various characters (Jack, Adaira, Sidra, Torin, and Fraedah), which sometimes felt choppy, but overall, it was a nice touch to get different perspectives and insights into character development. I thought that there was a missed opportunity to further world-build with the spirits, but I loved the concept, and overall it was easy to follow and understand. I also appreciated that I didn't guess much of the plot - I had inklings and was right once or twice, but I thought Rebecca Ross pulled it together nicely. I enjoyed the prose as well. In addition, I loved how Jack was a bard/musician. It's such a nice touch and change instead of the prolific and saturated warrior-like men in fantasy.
My only couple of slight complaints were that it was a bit slow in the beginning, and I must admit I didn't feel the relationship between Jack and Adaira (but I most certainly did with Sidra and Torin - I loved them). I am adamant about this, though: I will not give a full five stars to any romantasy with characters getting married and having babies in their early 20s. Torin has a five-year-old, a dead wife (not a spoiler), and is 27 years old. NOPE.
Regardless, I thought this was really well done, and I'm looking forward to reading the next and final one in the duology!
