The Court of Miracles by Kester Grant
2.75
“How Can a Man be So Handsome and Annoying at The Same Time”
The Court of Miracles is inspired by Les Miserables set in early 1800s Paris where the French Revolution failed. It follows Nina who is a member of the Thieves' Guild of The Court of Miracles and often refers to herself as 'The Black Cat' (pretty much nearly chapter). The court is a criminal underworld that is divided into nine guilds that specialize in different things depending on the guild.
I was so excited for this book but it was a huge letdown and I was honestly so close to dnfing this book. It took such a long time for me to get into this book, it was a big struggle. All the time jumps didn't help as they weren't always clear. There was minimal explanation of the world and history, especially regarding how The Court of Miracles came to be. There are so many characters in this book that it was hard to keep track of which guild they were part of and how important they were.
Nina, I found annoying. I literally had to read about her describing herself as The Black Cat so much that I just wanted to close my book. Despite joining the Guild of Thieves in hopes of finding her sister Azelma, she hardly mentioned trying to find her or even talk about her. It was all about Ettie who she adopted as a younger sister. Additionally, she was also with the Ghosts and never part of her actual Guild, colour me confused. Ettie had little to no personality apart from being pretty and commenting that everyone seems to be in love with Nina. Her only redeeming quality was the ending with the Tiger.
The most interesting character out of the three potential love interests was Montparnasse, the master of Assassins. I really have something about assassins in books because they all own me. I really liked St. Juste at the beginning then he was starting to feel a little flat and boring? I am kinda intrigued about learning more about the prince. Will he be bad? Or good? Time will tell. Nina and Montparnasse is currently the ship I am leaning towards more but still feels bland.
Will I read the next book? Maybe.
“This is how it started;
with a sister weeping in her bed;
a child so terrified she sold herself to a thief;
a girl so lovely, the world went to war to possess her”
