extremely informative and surprisingly gripping account of the political conflicts leading up to the Civil War. though the first-person narration can feel a little flat/gimmicky at points, it really helped me understand the thought process of these players more and brought them off the page in a way a flat accounting of facts wouldn't have
though it is rarely graphic, this book is about American chattel slavery and contains extensive discussion of the institution
