Jailbird Detective: Elvira Slate Investigations Book One by Helen Jacey

4.0

Rounded up from around 3.5 stars ⭐️

Jailbird detective follows Elvira, an ex convict turned private detective, as she escapes London in search of a new life. But can she really leave her past behind her?

I loved the setting of this novel. I haven’t read any private detective novels based shortly after WWII before. I could really picture the glamour of Hollywood at the time, through the lovely descriptions. The main downside for me was that sometimes I got a little lost. There was a large cast of characters and a complicated storyline. I’m still not 100% sure I have grasped what happened. I found myself trying to wrack my brain to remember who some of the characters were.

That being said, I really liked Elvira. I love a book with a strong female lead and Elvira was just that. She is tough as nails but with a soft edge to her. You can tell she desperately craves true human connections but struggles to trust. I’m really excited to see more from her character from future books in the series. The ending wrapped up nicely (despite not remembering who some of the characters were). I do love it when an author ties all the little loose ends, it always leaves me feeling satisfied!

I would recommend this to fans of historical mystery novels! I want to thank Helen Jacey and Shedunnit Productions for allowing me to read this book and give my personal thoughts.
