Rebel with a Clause: Tales and Tips from a Traveling Grammar Guru by Ellen Jovin

5.0

This book — part travelogue, part grammar manual, part nostalgia mixed with hope for the future — is an absolute delight from cover to cover. Ellen, more than anyone I know, epitomizes Bruce Lee’s advice to “be water my friend” in the way she interacts with each and every visitor to the Grammar Table reigning in the bullies, building up the under-confident, and just plain ol’ delighting in language and wordplay with other geeks. I'd say this book squarely follows in the American tradition of academic & academic-adjacent writing for popular audiences à la Gardner, Hofstadter etc.

If you're at all interested in language or grammar (or suspect you might be but felt intimidated) you can't go wrong picking up this book!
