How to Read Now by Elaine Castillo

5.0

This was such a valuable and important read for me! It serves as a great reminder, as a white reader, to make sure that I am not continuing to read authors of diversity and not think of myself as the intended reader. I don't think that I do that, I don't get upset when words aren't translated. I think I have a very open mindset, but it is a great reminder to continue to value other voices. Especially voices that are minorities. It is important to recognize the things in our past that were wrong even if at the time they maybe weren’t thought of as. We recognize it now as wrong and use it to learn from it. One of the essays mentioned how white authors have used and built upon stories and experiences that are inherently found in BIPOC communities. It kind of made me sick to listen to, as I am sure that I have read books like that in the past before I was as aware of the types of authors I was reading (as a teen). I don't think that I do this, but I am definitely going to make sure that I don't read books that romanticize the things that the white colonists did. Won't read anything like that, its so cringy.
