Even though The Blue Sky is loosely based on author Huseinovic's tragic loss of her parents as a girl, when this book came to me for an ED Lit. assignment, I was slightly surprised by the subject matter. It is definitely fantasy (girls don't disappear into doors on black birds' chests or float around in a cloud world). And I've never been a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland-esque stories. However, Sky depicts loss in a symbolic way that students in grade 3 and up could probably understand with some scaffolding.
