A beautiful, brilliant book. Butler explores American slavery skilfully, portraying the humanity of enslaved people and enslavers, never apologising for slave owners, but characterising them, making them recognisable people, and showing how people could accept slavery. Butler was a master of narrative and character voice, and this is a prime example. Absolutely read this book.
