Michael DeForge's work is so weird and colourful and creative that you'd expect it to feel loud and obvious; yet in the short, surreal First Year Healthy you really appreciate the layers and subtleties. The story of a young woman who's struggling with mental illness (although I admit I thought the protagonist was a man on first reading and had a much different understanding of the story) is a short fable that invites reader questions and imagination.
