The Vegetarian by Han Kang
5.0
I'm a lover of f***ed up books. *shrugs* I just love books that get under my skin, that make me squirm with equal parts fascination and disturbing awareness. THIS was one of those books. Man, talk about a out of the box read.
I picked this up at Powell's bookstore in Portland. The cover got me first, the blurb hooked me, and after reading the first few pages while standing there debating, I knew I was going to love it. So, I started reading it on the plane ride back to Tampa, and I devoured it every night before bed until it was done.
I love the feminism in this, the power, and more than anything, the study of humanity. It's always interesting to read about different cultures, but to read about it from a female author's POV and in such an interesting way was a treasure.
I can't really tell you what the book is about, because that's not what makes it special. It's the power within the words, the feeling that surges as you digest the true meaning behind the story.
I highly recommend The Vegetarian. It's a short read, and one so addicting that you're sure to fly through it. Pick it up for a darker, twistier read.
