Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson
5.0
I LOVED this book! I’m a big fan of YA mysteries and if you are as well then I definitely recommend this book!
I loved the main character, Stevie; she’s smart, unconventional and a feminist. A very strong, relatable character. I also loved the character of Janelle; it was nice seeing some representation for the African American and LGBT community!
While this book is far from a romance, there is a small side plot with some very apparent attraction between Stevie and David. It was cute and I’m really rooting for them.
The best part of this novel is that you really can’t tell who Truly Devious is. As mentioned in the synopsis, the story of Truly Devious starts in 1936 and the chapters go back and forth in time sharing aspects of what happened to Albert Ellingham’s family. The reader is left wondering how (and even if) these plots are related or intertwine, however; it’s not done in a frivolous way. The author has definitely penned this book (and the next book[s]) in a very well thought out way. The next one is DEFINITELY on my list of must-haves and I can’t wait to see where it takes Stevie and rest of Ellingham Academy!
