The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave
4.0
The Night we Lost Him was my first book by Laura Dave. I deeply enjoyed her writing style and world building. She created a murder mystery rooted in the past and family ties. I was impressed by her depiction of characters' emotions : in a few words she includes the reader in the family small cercle, taking us along with Nora and her brother to discover what happened to their father.
Of course the siblings are devastated when they learn of the death of their father : born from different mothers, they have never been close, but the doubt around the circumstances of death of their dad is going to bring them together. Despite the authorities thinking it was an accident, they team up and uncover secrets about their father’s past. The story is not only about piercing a secret, but also about long lost siblings building a meaningful relationship and learning to know themselves.
Julia Whelan’s book narration was touching and perfect. I really enjoyed her reading pace and the atmosphere she created.
