The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

5.0

Zusak's writing is simply phenomenal. To me, the most fascinating part of the whole novel is what we don't hear much about, and that is the narrator. Although written from Death's point of view, the narrator of the book is not evil as one would expect Death to would. He seems tired. I applaud Zusak's originality with this point. I also enjoy that it is never blatantly stated, "I am Death." The reader just has to use context clues and assume the identity of the voice telling The Book Thief's story. This novel is a must read, however, if you are a World War II fan who craves violence and gore of the actual fighting, this is not the book for you. This novel shows the daily life and struggles of living in Germany with Hitler.
