Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson
5.0
Steelheart was such a breath of fresh air that I couldn't not give it 5 stars. I found the characters pretty well developed without getting to know too much about them and I can learn more about them in the other two books. I also was excited to find a book where I felt surprised about some of the things happening since I thought it was going to be seemingly, remarkably, straightforward and way too easy for a lot of the things that happened in the book.
I really don't have any bad things to say about this book. So I'll uncharacteristically talk only about the things I really liked. I really enjoyed the whole concept of the book, where these super humanoid beings swoop down on Earth and instead of defending all mortal beings, they look to rule over them. The opening line had me hooked. And then David's vendetta became mine. I wanted the Reckoners to defeat Steelheart. The thing that kind of bothered me a little bit but didn't end up being a problem as the story went on is that it seemed like everything went exactly as they wanted, which felt a little unrealistic. But things quickly starting going sour, which felt more realistic.
I also really enjoyed the style of writing. It was really easy to read quickly and wasn't too foretelling. A lot of the things that happened towards the end, like Prof and Megan both being Epics never crossed my mind, and Megan being the one that told Steelheart what the Reckoners were going to do to surprised me. The ending wasn't too much of a cliffhanger per say, but it did leave me with questions I'm excited to get answered in the next book. Will Megan figure out how to control her powers and get back to the Reckoners? Who will the Reckoners go after next? Will someone take over Newcago that is better or worse than Steelheart? Will we figure out how the Epics became? So many questions!
This really was a well thought out story line and concept. The idea of people with special powers who are all evil is something that seems so simple but I've never read anything like it before. With Black Panther and The Avengers Infinity War in theaters and all the superhero things going on, this is a really fun read to do right now! If you enjoy rebel fighter stories who provide hope for those around them by being bad ass, read this series!
