⠀⠀where, oh where do i begin with this? this was addicting, intoxicating, and everything i didn’t know i needed.

⠀⠀before i begin, i want to emphasize that this wasn’t perfect. the writing was fairly simple, which is not a bad thing. it allowed you to flow through the story. however, the pacing was a bit fast at the end. it didn’t necessarily feel rushed... but it would have been nice to add a bit more. with that said, everything that needed to be done was done. i would be more worried if this was a standalone and i didn’t have the sequel at my ready. while i appreciate the fact information regarding the otherworld was told to the audience in a very natural manner, i would have appreciated more worldbuilding. i understand that worldbuilding isn’t incredibly necessary in this book, i do hope that there will be an expansion of our knowledge in the sequels.

⠀⠀despite the few complaints, the content of this was more than i could ask for. i adored all of the characters, especially callie and des. i saw myself in callie so i could appreciate her thoughts and actions. it felt like i was living through her. the relationship callie and des share is the one type of relationship trope (minor spoiler: split & found again and enemies to lovers) and it was done very well. it was incredibly interesting journey, especially due to the fact you were able to see the beginning of their relationship and what went wrong. along with reading about the events of 7-8 years ago, i really like how the author would introduce a bit of information from the past pieces and have callie reiterate it in the present pieces as if we never heard of it before. it was a nice, almost immersive addition.

⠀⠀overall, i can’t wait to dive in to the second book because i know i will eat it up the way i did with this one. if you have the opportunity, please give this a chance. the characters were extremely fun and their chemistry radiated off the page. their romance was angsty and steamy. despite being in a supernatural setting, there was a sense of realism that came along with the issues.

TW FOR THE BOOK: the book does deal with issues of sexual assault and rape. while it’s not discussed extensively, it is important to note that this play a large role in the story and callie’s character.
