Well worth the hype…

Before I do this review I want to remind everyone the angle I’m coming at it from. I’m a romance reader first and foremost. Like many of you, I dabble in fantasy here and there. I’ve read well beyond ACOTAR, so I feel qualified in coming at this from a romantasy point of view as well. So let’s get into it.

📔 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼: Fourth Wing, the first book in The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros.

📚𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Fantasy romance, enemies-to-lovers

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Violet has spent her entire life training to be a scribe, but at the last minute her mother forced her to a new fate… one that would make her a dragon rider. Armed with nothing but a weak body and strong mind, she is forced to work through the trials and tribulations of her deadly first year of school under the leadership of her family’s biggest enemy, Xaden - son of the leader of the rebellion that tore her family apart.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I absolutely loved this book and thought it was worth the hype it’s been given.

The story starts out at a frantic pace and never gives you a second to relax. Violet is an incredible character, and reading her grow into her own makes it hard not to root for her with your whole body. But then there’s a cast of characters outside of Xaden and Violet who you get alarmingly attached to.

Rebecca Yarros has always been a favorite writer of mine, but she’s new to fantasy and I can see why that gives some pause. But in my opinion, she nailed it. The world building was unique and familiar at the same time, and done in a way that wasn’t like info-dumping and overwhelming.

And guys… dragons. Dragons that were characters in and of themselves, and who you become just as attached to as human characters.

From a romance perspective, it was there. In many ways it was a slow burn, but the tension was clear from the beginning. And once it makes it’s way to fill steam you’re completely addicted.

Also, always noting for my fellow readers who hate cliffhangers that the end of this book was bearable - and won’t rip your soul out as you wait for the next edition in the fall.

Overall, I’m glad I jumped into this world, and I’m going to have one hell of a book hangover.

🔮 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝗲: Medium. If you’ve read fantasy, i would even classify this as easy. Regardless, I loved learning the world and felt like it was built and presented really well.
