The Warrior Retreat by John Lynch

5.0

This was typically not a book I would gravitate towards, but picked it up for a book club read this month. I’m so glad that I did…

The Warrior Retreat follows multiple veterans who served together and their lives after returning home. This touches on everything from mental illness to recovery, addiction to how America fails to adequately support active soldiers and veterans. It was much more of an emotional read for me than it was quintessential horror. This was my first experience reading about CPTSD in regard to the post-service reality of US veterans. It gave me a huge prospective on something I always knew was a deeply rooted problem in our country, but the wide range of post deployment healing, or lack there of, was really eye opening.

Lynch does a wonderful job with his characters & even though I have very little experience with the real effects of post-service acclimation, I found each of their stories to be quite moving. The ending was fast paced and emotional. I highly recommend you pick this up.

5/5!
