The Perilous Sea by Sherry Thomas
5.0
4.5 Stars - The Perilous Sea was even better than The Burning Sky. The relationship between Titus and Iolanthe is still adorable, and you really root for both of them to fix their issues as a couple even as they grow as individuals. To move the plot forward, Thomas alternates between the "present" and the "past" - in the former, Titus and Iola have lost their memories and are stranded in the Sahara, slowly falling in love again as they escape the Bane's forces. Meanwhile, we also see them seven months earlier, revealing how they found themselves in the desert. I found this technique to be really engaging and innovative for a middle book in a trilogy. While some aspects of the world-building are still questionable (is the Domain on Earth or in an alternate dimension? what's with the hidden memories?), I loved the addition of backstory for supporting characters like Kashkhari and Mrs. Hancock, who come into play in interesting ways. The book ends with a cliffhanger before the beginning of a battle with Atlatis - I can't wait to see how it unfolds!
