The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
5.0
Ever known the feeling when you've been bitten by the book-hangover bug? You think about the book morning, noon, and night. You wake up to it, fall asleep to it. and you want to read it again.
That's what I normally feel after finishing and getting attached to great books. but right now - what i am feeling is superior. this book is not like the other great books i had read. this one is unique, beautiful, magical, imperfectly perfect, and just awfully wonderful. this had made me think thoroughly, feel scattered emotions, loose myself in the midst of pages and words. it somehow made my heart squeezed in a fabulous way.
i am utterly speechless.
A circus, "Le Cirque des Rêves," only opens at night and appears in a place without notice. Behind the circus, a magically deadly competition between two magicians - Celia Bowen and Marco Alisdair - is brewing. They were trained separately and differently from each other by their instructors: for Celia, it's his father and for Marco, it's a man who picked him from the slums.
You see, it's a complex competition. Only the last illusionist standing shall be the victor, everyone around the circus would be involved and the hardest part of all, is Marco and Celia falling in love with each other.
The Night Circus is a slow-paced book full of beautiful details and imagery set in the 20th century in various timelines. It is also not an action-packed book with fighting, dueling, or backstabbing. So if you're looking for these kind of books, then i guess this isn't the book and you would not enjoy this. we have different tastes and i totally get that.
I absolutely adore the magical writing style, the beautiful prose and the breathtaking world-building. The plot resolves within a couple of characters and for me, it's not a simple one, it has a rich and deep meaning that makes you very gripped in the story. Every turn of page is magical.
This book is just so atmospheric, so unique and so lovely. Some moments though i get confused making me loose myself and reread some sentences. But once getting perfectly use to it, i find myself pulling further into the circus and getting attached. The writing style is one of a kind, i love it!
the characters. i think there's not much character development in this book and some of them are dull and plain. so why did i still give this a five-star? omygosh, this book is very dear to me.
Celia Bowen, the illusionist of the circus. Marco Alisdair, the assistant of the circus's proprietor and celia's opponent. They're the main characters but it's cool how the plot evolved all around the characters. One thing i love is they show that 'love conquers all'. Their romance tho was late, it showed at the 50% of the book.
The Murray Twins, Poppet and Widget Murray, my personal favorites. Their powers, at least for me, have deep meanings. for instance, she could read the stars and he could read people. i lovee them, must protect! Also, Bailey Clarke. I don't have much to say about him but i am super happy for him.
Hector Bowen and Alexander/Mr. A.H- this quote pretty sums them up:
Chandresh Lefevre, the Proprietor. Isobel Martin. Tsukiko. The Burgess Sisters. Ethan Barris. Mme Padva. and Herr Thiessen. Among these side characters i am fascinated by Tsukiko, i wanna know her past and Herr Thiessen, he was such an intelligent man.
Finishing the night circus is like flipping my pillow to the cold side. As I enjoy the majestic, mysterious feeling whilst reading, I finally drift off into its world, feeling as if my entire world shifted when putting this book down.
I think i've been bitten by the book-hangover bug twice!
Thanks Julia, i impulsively started this book because of you reading this lol. and to Evie and Lucie (and Flert Bot) for buddy reading with us! (i honestly want to put more quotes hehe, but here's the last:)

"The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not."

“There are many kinds of magic, after all.”

Hector Bowen and Alexander/Mr. A.H- this quote pretty sums them up:
“Our instructors do not understand how it is,” she says. “To be bound to someone in such a way. They are too old, too out of touch with their emotions. They no longer remember what it is to live and breathe within the world. They think it simple to pit any two people against each other. It is never simple. The other person becomes how you define your life, how you define yourself. They become as necessary as breathing. Then they expect the victor to continue on without that.

"I don’t want a story you create from here”—he taps his temple with his finger—“I want one that is here.” He lets his hand hover over his heart for a moment before sitting back in his chair.
