Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
4.0
The story is a slow burn, following our main character Noemí as she uncovers the mystery of her cousin’s illness in the house of her cousin’s new husband.
I quickly picked up on and appreciated the connections to Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper”, some allusions to Poe’s “Tell-Tale Heart” and “Fall of the House of Usher”, and of course the Lovecraft-ian focus on mycelial aspects.
The last third of the book is worth the slow, deliberate unveiling of High Place (the house where the story takes place), its history, and the author’s notes and interview following the last chapter shed light on some of the historical and social themes that Moreno-Garcia is exploring.
