Rat Queens Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery by Kurtis J. Wiebe

5.0

I put off Rat Queens because of the controversy after the arrest of artist and co-creator Roc Upchurch, but I'd heard the comic was excellent, and recently found second hand copies of the first four volumes. It's truly a banger of a comic, featuring four sassy women adventurers à la a D&D party, and plenty of other diversity, including queer representation. While other comics have tread similar ground in more recent years I know how much it meant when Rat Queens came out to have women at the centre of this kind of story. Volume 1 is a page-turner involving bar brawls, murder, conspiracy, and big fights against fantasy creatures. I'm looking forward to reading the next instalments, even though I still feel weird about the way things were handled behind-the-scenes at Image.
