Center Center: A Funny, Sexy, Sad Almost-Memoir of a Boy in Ballet by James Whiteside

funny inspiring lighthearted fast-paced

4.0

This was a pretty fun quick read! I think I was hoping for more ballet content, but it was more centered on Whiteside’s family dynamics and queerness. I do appreciate a good gay memoir! His discussions of drag felt particularly timely. I was pleasantly surprised by how honest and vulnerable he got. It takes a strong person to own up to mistakes, especially in such a public, permanent format. What I actually liked most about this book was the genre subversion. Some chapters were truly memoir, but others played with the truth. Even just some hyperbolic sentences delightfully pushed the line of nonfiction. I loved this! My favorite chapter told the story of an ill-fated transatlantic flight, but Whiteside wrote it as a short play with Pussycat Dolls musical interludes! Also enjoyed the illustrations throughout.
