Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
5.0
I want to write a beautiful, fleshed out review of this book that completely stole my heart, but more than that I want to just roll around on the ground and scream and make fan art and read fan fiction and just… write a love letter. So I will follow my heart!
Gideon the Ninth stole my heart because the characters stole my heart. Gideon Nav pointed her sword at me and I handed it right over. The absolute feeling of impending doom for Gideon and everyone she meets captivated me. I loved Harrowhark. I loved the horrid relationship Gideon and Harrow started out with and I loved watching it slowly get slightly better. Doomed lesbians. Always fighting and I just wanted to sit down in a room with them both and make everyone talk about their feelings. I loved the way Gideon interacted the world around her and everyone she crossed paths with. Her quick judgments and sharp wit and sense of humor! Her sheer skill and intimidation! GOd
If you’re looking for a descriptive review, Rick Riordan’s here on Goodreads is top tier and a wonderful endorsement for the PJO fans out there, but I’d like to quote part of it that truly stuck out to me (PJO fan): “What follows is part Dune (dueling royal houses in space), part Nico di Angelo (snarky queer death demigods) and part Agatha Christie locked-room mystery (Locked Tomb mystery?). Gideon and Harrow have to learn to work together, or at least not kill each other, while all around them in the creepy halls and secret laboratories of the First House, people start disappearing… The secret to becoming a Lyctor might be worse than any of them ever imagined.”
“Part Nico di Angelo (snarky queer death demigods)”?! I wish I had read that many months ago and I would’ve started this series immediately! I can’t understate how much I appreciated that the sarcastic, snarky humor in this book was never cringey to me. Sometimes the tone of the humor in books can really take me out, but I was just giggling to myself reading and listening along. Gideon is perfect to me! Idk!
I also highly recommend the audiobook! I alternated between reading the physical book and listening to the audiobook and damn! That audiobook narrator, Moira Quirk, absolutely KILLED it! She is perfect!
I can’t wait to read the rest of this series that’s been released so far. The ending of this one honestly completely shattered me but I am ready to pick up the pieces and keep going. I am desperate for more writing from the genius brain Tamsyn Muir. Muir managed to write a science fiction/fantasy novel that feels completely fresh and unique, with a foundation of both incredible writing and fascinating world-building, and queer representation to top it all off!
