My Imaginary Mary by Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand

3.0

Ugh, they pulled a My Plain Jane, and just when you think you're gonna have a YA book that doesn't think the be all end all is putting every vagina with a penis.... fucking Faraday shows up on the last page. I'm getting less forgiving about it. These young women are whole and complete on their own, stop treating them like puzzles missing a piece until an underwhelming dude shows up. Stop perpetuating that message, it's a shitty one!

I thought I'd like this one because Mary Shelley was cool af and we all know how these authors like to re-jigger history but..... she was much less cool than actual Mary Shelley because this one just chasing underwhelming boys around. I can almost forgive it for Pan because he is literally straight from her imagination but....... she's not interesting because of the person she ended up with, y'know? And instead all of her achievements were more like afterthoughts? Which bloooows.

I still enjoyed the sense of humor (though the 'haha, this current expression/famous quote/pop culture reference showed up here in the past, haha' schtick is wearing slightly thin) but the rest of it.... not so much.
