Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West by Blaine Harden

fast-paced

5.0

A recent read that I devoured was "Escape from Camp 14". It's one of the rare stories of someone escaping a North Korean prison camp. The author makes a big point of pointing out inconsistencies in the victim's story to start the book, and we really never know how much of any story is true, even just because memory works in unpredictable ways.

That said, it doesn't really matter to me because if the gist of the story is correct, then it's harrowing and awful and reminds us of the value of our individual freedom. We're lucky to live in a place where we can simply roam around and even make mistakes without major consequences. It makes me sad that there are places where this is not true.

I don't like to get political on my social media, and maybe in general - my interest in these books is usually that element of personal hardship and loss of freedom. Apparently there's a movie - maybe I should watch it!
