Strangers to Ourselves: Unsettled Minds and the Stories That Make Us by Rachel Aviv

dark emotional hopeful informative inspiring reflective sad medium-paced

4.25

Describing psychosis, “It’s like trying to explain what a bark sounds like to someone who’s never heard of a dog,” Aviv quoting a woman she once interviewed. Still, Aviv recognizes that it’s worth trying to put into words the experience of mental illness because it might be able to help someone. She presents 5 accounts, including her own with anorexia, of people who struggled with various maladies and had the insight to document their struggles. While providing framework for each case, including some interesting history in the treatment of each ailment, Aviv mostly lets the patients story speak for itself. I really enjoyed reading these accounts and, especially, following the treatment path each patient took (or didn’t). I highly recommend to anyone who has struggled with mental illness or had a loved one that has. There’s a lot of useful information that Aviv hopes to raise awareness and help get proper treatment to those who need it.
