Beautiful Darkness by Fabien Vehlmann, Kerascoët, Kerascoët

5.0

A pure delight; draws from fairytales with its its layout of problem, world, and protagonist, and yet were it breaks with common fairytale structure is where things start going right for Coddie. A pretty powerful take on agency. At the same time it exposes some of our culturally held notions about beauty, but doesn't dismiss them. Rather, all of them lead to Coddie/Beauty's moment in which she realizes her own agency. I love how her education plays a vital role in that. I was blown away, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
