It follows five 20-somethings as they navigate living in Japan for a year. The plot is very "A slice of life", but the themes around belonging,
language acquisition, and friendship are so beautifully done. Learning multiple languages can be so difficult, yet rewarding.
I hate how demonizing people in the US often are to people who are multilingual or multicultural. These differences and pieces of people should be embraced and celebrated. I see the effects the negative treatment has in
my students all the time. It takes a lot to embrace a second language and allow yourself to be you within that new identity. It's a lot of
pressure for anyone, especially a kid who is still learning how life works in any context.
I loved how beautifully intertwined the language was used to tell the story and create depth in each character. Definitely recommend!
