Debt is a moral obligation, not an economic obligation. Graeber takes this seemingly simple declaration and unravels the connection that debt has to nearly every aspect of our lives: it’s shaping of the institution of marriage, founding concepts of religion such as sin and redemption, creation of the human trafficking market, the definitions of freedom and property, not to mention capitalism and modern markets; and how it’s all made possible through violence. The vastness of his research is presented organized around his arguments as opposed to a strictly linear timeline, making them more impactful and inspiring enlightenment page by page. I can’t overstate how much I loved this book and plan to annoy any of you that talk to me with its content for some time to come :)
