The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

5.0

I love Grady Hendrix, his books rule. This one, an examination of the slasher film, asks a question that many of those films fail to, “What happens to the women after the credits roll?” The book, while far from a feminist masterpiece, calls into question a few great points about how men subjugate their power by oppressing, killing, and traumatizing women.

Aside from the message, it’s a great slasher, with as many twists and turns as the great films it’s borrowing from. The group, at its core, taking from Halloween, Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Leprechaun? Black Christmas? It’s actually pretty interesting to me that our main character who “isn’t really a Final Girl” is not chosen from a major horror franchise.

Come for the references to slasher history. Stay for the action and the fairly feminist message.

Probably my favorite thing to come out this year, so far.
