Passing by Nella Larsen

5.0

After reading Quicksand last year, I decided Nella Larsen was an author whose work I wanted to save as there is so little of it still in print. However, I found I couldn't wait any longer and so, a year post-Quicksand, caved and picked up Passing. The topic of light skinned/dark skinned is one familiar in writings produced around the Harlem Renaissance, particularly in novels such as Blacker the Berry and Black No More, but I found Larsen's take fresh and thoughtful, with an array of moments that left me gaping in shock. I'm very sad that I've read both of her in print novels now but also immensely glad to have read them.
