Feel Free: Essays by Zadie Smith
5.0
This collection of essays shows that even a book review can be stand-alone art. Smith writes about varied topics from hip hop to film to life in New York and England, the pursuit of happiness and censorship.
Her ideas often surprised me, and her insights frequently caused me to reevaluate my opinions.
I especially enjoyed her discussion of GET OUT, and the black experience of watching it.
Often, while reading, I thought that Smith succeeded in doing what Roxane Gay fails to do with her essays. Smith can discuss popular culture in a way that elevates the material, while Gay often comes across as merely an adoring fan.
These essays of Smith’s read with the same captivating clarity of Patti (also-but-not-related) Smith and JoAnn Beard.
