The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
5.0
This book is truly a masterpiece in the genre of phsychological thrillers. There is nothing I didn’t love. It’s premise is simple. A shocking murder is committed. The supposed murderer never speaks again. Mystery and intrigue abound in this twisted psychological thriller that follows a criminal psychotherapist by the name of Theo Faber as he tries to get the murderer, Alicia Berenson, to talk about her motives in killing her husband she supposedly was in love with.
I really enjoyed how the main character, Theo, analyzed Alicia and has the goal of trying to "fix" her. He explained everything as a psychologist would, always giving a reason behind everything he asked and did and I appreciated the detail the author showed in that. I also really loved the mystery and complexity of Alicia. The narrative had me continually trying to figure out Alicia as a character and the more you learned about her life before the murder, the more I wanted to figure out the mystery behind her. I also love how the story didn't just focus on Alicia, but also explored Theo's life as well. You really got into his mind as well as hers.
This story explores so many issues and dynamics, love, and the absence of it, family dynamics, heartbreak and pain, and it explores it from such a intellectual standpoint. I really enjoy books that explain process and give me ideas to ponder. The intellectual pursuit Theo make’s of her case is so intriguing to me, that it kept me hooked continuously. Cause not only did I want to figure out Alicia’s character, I also enjoyed and loved learning about psychotherapy.
The story threads follows Theo's life and hers and intertwines in the most surprising way to a very satisfying conclusion. That ending was everything! So surprising and shocking! Very enjoyable read! Full 5 stars for me! Thanks to Celadon Books and Eidelweiss for the DRC for review!
