“I come from deep issues and shallow solutions.”
This was my first novel in verse, and I loved it! This was such a heartwarming coming-of-age story about Michael whose identity, like all of ours, is multiple and complex. The book is the occasion to discuss race, sexuality, internalized homophobia, friendship, the fight or flight response to anxiety-inducing situations and belonging. The author narrates the audiobook, and he makes it come to life beautifully. Michael is a writer; I enjoyed his poetry. The quote above is from a poem he recites after he joins his drag family.
