A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi
fast-paced
5.0
I started this book several months back, but I was having trouble with the audiobook on Scribd, so I only managed to read 5 chapters before I had to stop reading it. I finally picked it back up starting from the beginning because I had forgotten what I had read, and I ended up reading the whole book in one sitting. I am kicking myself for waiting so long to read this one.
This book was eye opening and heartbreaking. It brought out so many emotions for me but mostly anger at how Shirin was treated. I was shocked at how blatant the comments/actions were and how ignorant people were and really just everything that Shirin had to endure was just shocking to me. How can people think that kind of behavior is acceptable. I don't get how Shirin and her brother were treated in completely different ways. I just don't know how to formulate my thoughts for this book. It just made me so angry at all of the injustice and stupidity.
There was a romance in this book which I loved. I loved how Ocean broke down Shirin walls and showed her that everybody isn't the same. He was really naive when it came to what Shirin had to deal with, but they come from very different worlds and that seemed realistic to me. I wasn't happy with the ending when it comes to the romance but not because it was a bad ending but because of my own personal preferences. The author broke my heart and put it back together again just to break it again.
If you haven't read this book, I highly recommend it. The author doesn't pull any punches and spares no one's feelings. It will pull at your heartstrings, and it needs to be read by everyone.
