The Sackler family are the people behind the drug Oxycontin. Famously secretive throughout their entire history, Radden Keefe is finally able to tell their stories via court documents and those that have worked closely with them over the years. He illustrates how decisions they made with the production, marketing, and selling of Oxycontin, along with their consistent deniability of its risk for abuse and addiction, caused the opioid crises that is still ravaging lives today. It’s a book about business, marketing, and greed. It shows the corruption of government agencies and local doctors trusted with the integrity to do what is best for us. Its ultimate goal is to prove without doubt that the actions of the Sacklers make them liable for all of the death of suffering their drug has caused, and it achieves. It’s also fascinating to see scion Arthur Sackler’s story, one in which genius helped him to achieve the American dream, and how quickly the wealth he earned corrupted him. PRK is one of the best non-fiction writers today and this is one I recommend to everyone, based both on the relevance of the subject and the quality of the writing/reporting.
